The Union Buildings were built to house the administrative offices of the Union of South Africa in 1910, and are situated in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa. Although the sandstone building is not open to the public for security reasons, the impressive Renaissance building with its Cape Dutch and Italian influences may be admired from the peaceful gardens.
The gardens boast a range of statues and memorials which are well worth seeing. The inauguration of former president, Nelson Mandela, as well as his memorial service was held in the amphitheatre.
