The sizzling summer is here, the masses are migrating to the coast, the waves are rolling in, but you’re no surfer ─ there might even be a fear-inducing fin on the horizon … Not to worry, TravelGround to the rescue! We compiled a list of 10 family-friendly tidal pools along South Africa’s vast coastline that are ideal for day trips and, as an added bonus, they’re shark free zones!

St James Tidal Pool, Cape Town, Western Cape

The iconic tidal pool at St James is located just down the road from Muizenberg before Kalk Bay, and is renowned for the row of colourful beach huts along its shoreline. The retaining walls are visible on a portion of the beach, forming a mostly shallow sea pool ─ a popular spot for locals to go for a quick dip before starting their day. During peak season, this pool is usually packed because of False Bay’s wonderfully warm water. This is a great place to bring the family during the holidays, but if you plan on spending the day at the beach, go early to secure a nice spot for your umbrella.

Salt Rock Tidal Pool, Dolphin Coast, KwaZulu-Natal

The easily accessible Salt Rock Tidal Pool is situated just north of one of the most sought-after swimming beaches in Ballito. This pool is ideal for novice snorkelers and the resident parrot fish is an absolute delight to watch ─ if you’re lucky, you might even spot a few rare corals at the bottom of the pool! It is also perfect for children because of its calm waters. So, remember to pack enough snacks and sunscreen as you are guaranteed to spend many hours in the soothing Indian Ocean!

Glencairn Tidal Pool, Cape Town, Western Cape

This lovely tidal pool is close to the Glencairn station and can easily be spotted from the train that runs between Simon’s Town and Cape Town. The walls of the pool were built in the 1920’s and safely portions off a part of the ocean ─ ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The sandy, white beach is also a hotspot for sunbathing, so hop on the train to Glencairn and come and enjoy this tranquil pool.

Granny’s Pool, Southbroom, KwaZulu-Natal

This tidal pool is set on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal and is the ideal spot for swimming, especially when the tide comes in. The pool is quite safe and you can enjoy a lovely dip in the warm ocean all the while being protected by the rocky barricade. So, if you enjoy calmly floating on your back, be sure to visit Granny’s Pool this December!

Dalebrook Tidal Pool, Cape Town, Western Cape

The Dalebrook Tidal Pool can easily be missed as it lies just beyond Danger Beach, between St James and Kalk Bay. This pool is not well-known and thus ideal if you’re looking for a quiet swimming spot. A low stone wall safely surrounds this tidal pool, yet still allows the natural ebb and flow of the ocean. It is well suited for the little ones as the water is quite shallow and the floor of the pool is mainly flat rock ─ remember to bring their goggles and snorkels along as there are lots of marine creatures that will surely enchant them!

The Marine Tidal Pool, Hermanus, Western Cape

The Marine Tidal Pool is located in central Hermanus on the world-renowned Whale Coast. The pool is in full view of The Marine Hotel, separated from the crashing waves of the ocean, and it’s really safe for swimming. This pool is also a nice place for snorkeling at low tide and offers lovely views of the surrounding area. A cliff path with a steep set of steps lead down to the pool, so it’s not recommended for people who have difficulty walking. Remember to wear flippers as the floor of the pool has a few sharp rocks!

Camps Bay Tidal Pool, Cape Town, Western Cape

This large tidal pool is positioned across the street from various holiday homes and restaurants in the picturesque Cape Town suburb of Camps Bay. It is also next to the famous Camps Bay beach, which makes visiting this pool ideal for beach bums. Pack a picnic basket, head off to the beach, spend some time splashing in the pool and enjoy a breathtaking Cape Town sunset!

Maiden’s Cove Tidal Pool, Clifton, Western Cape

This scenic tidal pool is nestled between the beaches of Clifton and Glen Beach. There is also a beautiful lookout spot which is well known for its exquisite vistas of Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles, and the Atlantic Ocean. This pool is superb for snorkeling during low tide and also has some great diving spots. The grass area at Maiden’s Cove is the ideal spot for a braai, so pack some food, grab your beach towels and head to Maiden’s Cove for a splendid family outing in the Mother City!

Gonubie Tidal Pool, East London, Eastern Cape

This tidal pool lies on the paradisal Gonubie Beach, just 20 kilometers northeast of East London. It borders the Gonubie River and you will also have access to the sparkling lagoon. Access to the beach and tidal pool is provided by a jetty, which is also the perfect spot for dolphin and whale watching. This beach is well-liked by surfers and it provides an awesome opportunity for families to spend the day exploring and relaxing on the beach, whilst dipping their toes in the foamy Indian Ocean.

Miller’s Point, Simon’s Town, Western Cape

Miller’s Point Tidal Pool is tucked away between Simon’s Town and Cape Point and is the ideal spot for a day out with the kids. This pool is fantastic for swimming and snorkeling and is surrounded by large green lawns for the adults to relax on. Braai spots are available, as well as a boat launching slipway. Seeing as this tidal pool is not as well-known, it is the perfect place for a chilled summer afternoon well-spent with friends and family.

Do something different this December and exchange the chlorinated water of your swimming pool for the salty sea water of the various tidal pools all around South Africa. Hours of fun in the sun await!
