The best way to explore Hermanus is to park your car and throw your keys in your bag for the rest of the weekend. This unassuming town is best explored on foot. Here are a few things to do in Hermanus with your loved one, come storm or shine.
With nature reserves, coastal routes, and remote beaches, Hermanus is the ultimate spot for a romantic picnic. Grab your baskets and blankets and throw in a candle and bottle of wine for luck.
You’ll find Fick’s Pool in Westcliff, cradled between the rocks and the ocean. It’s much smaller than the marine tidal pool, but it’s a fantastic spot for a sunset swim and picnic.

Pack a picnic and head to one of Hermanus’ untamed beaches. The busier Blue Flag Grotto and Hawston beaches have lovely picnic areas, Kammabaai has a braai area under Milkwood trees, and Sandbaai has calm pools for snorkelling. If you’re looking for something a little more intimate, Rowweklip and Langbaai are quieter alternatives.

Romantiques Bygones and Collectables
Every Saturday afternoon, you can watch a golden oldie on an old reel to reel projector and screen. Sink into a red velveteen armchair in a theatre you’ll quite possibly have all to yourself! They even make popcorn.

Boat cruises are run by various companies and are a great way to spend an afternoon. Relax on the deck and look out for dolphins, penguins, seals, resident Brydes whales, and seasonal Southern Right and Humpback whales.
Marine Dynamics runs trips to Dyer Island in Gansbaai to see the marine Big 5. They have eco marine excursions between January and June, and whale watching cruises between July and December.

Explore the town of Hermanus in a tuk tuk or head out on the mountain passes for some exceptional coastal views. You won’t be disappointed.
Rotary Way is a favourite for locals with views over the mountains, ocean, golf courses, and vineyards. The 3.8km route is great for sunsets and photos, and it has plenty of walking trails and picnic spots. Other day trips include drives to Betty’s Bay, Gansbaai, Arniston, Struisbaai, and L’Agulhas.

Ride a tuk tuk
Whisk your loved one off on a day of adventure in a tuk tuk. They run all day and night and are a fantastic way to explore the town – while still getting to sip those cocktails!

Set off on foot to explore the beauty of Hermanus.There’s plenty of routes to choose from, whether you’re looking forward to wildlife spotting in the mountains or a spectacular sea view.
Fernkloof Nature Reserve
Fernkloof Nature Reserve has over 50km of paths to choose from with varying lengths and gradients, leading through 1600 species of fynbos. The Tree Trail has signs describing interesting facts about each tree species. Keep an eye out for baboons, small buck, and 111 species of birds. Walker Bay Nature Reserve
Walker Bay, stretching from Klein River to De Kelders, has plenty of coastal routes. The beach walk to Die Plaat with its limestone outcrops is fantastic for whale watching while the nearby Klipgat Cave, previously home to middle to late Stone Age humans, has an interesting interpretation centre. The 12km Cliff Path hugs the cliffs between the New Harbour and Grotto Beach, leading through rocky coves, fynbos, sandy beaches, and forest groves. Well placed benches are great spots for whale watching. Keep an eye out for mongoose and dassies. Route map.

Shark cage diving
Shark cage diving is an experience you’ll remember for years to come. Tours depart from Kleinbaai harbour in Gansbaai, just 40 minutes from Hermanus. A steel cage provides a (reasonably) safe way to view the Great Whites in the water. No qualifications are needed and you can surface view from the boat if you chicken out.
