These great sandstone cliffs guard the mouth of the lagoon, connecting the estuary with the sea. A lookout has been erected on the Eastern Head, commanding views across the lagoon, Leisure Isle, and the entire of Knysna. The Western Head is a privately owned nature reserve (Featherbed Nature Reserve) and offers an eco-experience like no other. Featherbed is a South African heritage site, accessible by ferry only, and access is limited to those in the company of one of the reserve’s specialist guides.

The Knysna Lagoon is one of the few places along the coast (and in the world) that supports an oyster hatchery, of which the oysters are reputed as being the tastiest in the world.
