ABOUT PORT ALFRED, SOUTH AFRICA: Port Alfred is in the Eastern Cape, half-way between Port Elizabeth and East London, at the mouth of the Kowie River. Originally called Port Kowie, after the river which runs through the town, the town was established in the 1820's by British settlers. Later, when Queen Vitoria's son Prince Alfred visited here, the name was changed to honour him. Today, this port's award winning beaches and the mild climate of the eastern seaboard has attracted a population of almost 20,000 people.One of Port Alfred's most distinctive features is a beautiful marina with a number of luxurious houses facing the canals.
