With its many blue-flag beaches and warm waves, Port Elizabeth has become known as the water-sport capital of South Africa. A more relaxing option, however, is a sunset cruise from PE harbour - where you may be lucky enough to see dolphins or whales in their natural habitat. If you are looking for a taste of PE's cultural heritage, then the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Museum in St George's Park may be for you. Because of limited exhibition space the collection is rotated, but visitors can expect to see priceless South African art with an emphasis on pieces from the Eastern Cape - as well as an international collection that includes British art, Oriental prints, Indian miniatures and Chinese textiles.

For an overview of Port Elizabeth's rich history, the Donkin Heritage Trail through the local CBD can't be missed.
