A bit of history:
Cullinan boast a rich history of more than 100 years. It came into being with the discovery of the world biggest diamond. The Cullinan diamond was found by Frederick Wells, surface manager of the Premier Diamond Mining Company in Cullinan on 26 January 1905. The stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine.

Cullinan is a good outing for the tourist on the prowl for a historic adventure in the country. Mine tours, walking down Oak Avenue with its curio shops, interesting restaurants and the famous McHardy Museum, home of the McHardy sisters, Evelina and May McHardy, make you forget where you are for a moment. Become part of the nostalgia as you see how these little mining houses have been restored and are used to still portray the true ambience of this little mining town.

One of the features in Cullinan is the Cullinan Recreation Club, erected in 1912. On the walls inside are nostalgic murals painted by Italian prisoners of war in 1944. A must-see.

The mine itself covers 32ha and is 500m deep, nearly twice the size of the man-mined big hole of Kimberley.

A variety of old church buildings can be visited, some of them still being used today. Then there is the Open Air Museum of mining equipment, as well as the old mine hospital who is still in operation today. Even the Nedbank branch of Premier Mine is also in an old sand-stone building.
