”Sibuya” (meaning we will return) is a 2400 hectare, Malaria-free, Big 4 Game Reserve and is the only game reserve in South Africa accessed exclusively by riverboat. Guests arrive and park at reception in Kenton-on-Sea, just 130 kms from Port Elizabeth and 150 kms from East London and the unique experience starts immediately with an 11 or 12km boat trip from the sea up the magnificent Kariega Estuary to “River Camp” or “Forest Camp”.
River and Forest Camps, situated on the banks of the Kariega River, are rustic luxury in tented camps that will leave you with memories of how simple and enjoyable life used to be before the distractions of our modern age. All our tents, on raised wooden decks, accommodate two adults sharing either in king size or twin beds. Additional camp beds are available for young children sharing with parents. Mosquito netting to all doors and windows and en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold water ensure that a night at Sibuya River Camp is comfortable and safe.
The soft glow of lanterns, the water gently lapping on the boats and the sounds of the African night, will be the only distractions as you reminisce in the warm embrace of the evening fire, while our ever friendly camp staff prepare the finest African fireside fare. These small intimate camps, with Professional Guides, affords guests the opportunity to follow a personalised programme of activities. A mixture of game drives, river cruises, canoeing and guided bush or beach walks will enthral those with a desire to fill the day, whilst hammocks in the trees or a fishing line dangling in the water will suit those who wish to take it easy.
Antelope abound, including the rare Bontebok and Oribi. Giraffe, Zebra and the Big 5 make this a truly memorable experience as one views game against the magnificent backdrop of pristine coastal forest and the sea a few kilometres away. With close to 300 species Sibuya is a birders paradise. Sea, forest, veld and riverine species can all be seen in the course of a day, but the host of raptors and possible sightings of the elusive Narina Trogan and rare Barred Owl, will truly delight and reward the ardent enthusiast.
This breathtakingly beautiful reserve spans the meandering Kariega River on its course to meet the warm Indian Ocean and idyllic beaches of the Sunshine Coast. A natural extension to any Garden Route journey, Sibuya Game Reserve provides a magnificent setting for viewing all of Africa’s redoubtable “Big Five”.
