25Km West of the town Naboomspruit (Mookgopong) in the Eastern Waterberg range in the Northern /Limpopo Province. The greater area named WELGEVONDEN was established circa 1850. Manganese, Tin and later Platinum discovered by Adolf Erasmus was mined from 1887 to 1913 and again up to 1935.
The area in the centre of the farm is history rich with the remains of the Welgevonden Tin and later Welgevonden Platinum mining activity with shafts, adits and remains of the reduction works and houses.
After the mining ended, the area was divided into smaller farms resulting in this existing section 12 of the original farm Welgevonden (606 Ha). In 2004/5 the farm was game fenced, infra-structure improved and stocked with game. 15 Up market chalets and a Lapa /entertainment area was build and to date the farm is utilized as a low impact nature/game farm.
The farm borders on the Welgevonden Geological Fault line in the East, resulting in an abundance of water (Hot springs) in the area, and a large variety of mineral rich rock formations, intrusions and undulating terrain.
The rock formations are sediments in the pre-Cambian age approximately 2500 Million years before any life forms could lead to fossils.
The farm is 1420 to 1500 meter above sea level and has densely vegetated rocky hills, kloofs and valleys, streams, springs, seasonal waterfalls, and a 15 ha dam frontage
Well-known writer and author “Eugene Marais” did the research for his book “The Soul of the Ape” in the area.
