Description
Meerlust Quarters is a lovely self-catering unit located on the Meerlust Estate. Wake up in a world little changed in nearly 300 years. On Meerlust Estate, the Myburgh family home for eight generations, former slave quarters and workrooms have been renovated to provide the most unusual accommodation, the Meerlust Quarters.
The building is set behind the historic Cape Dutch house where current owner, Hannes Myburgh lives, and a short meander from the estate’s tasting room, and is typical of the architectural vernacular of the time. The walls are white and high, wooden framed windows set deep into the thick walls, floors are deep rich Oregon pine and key pieces of antique furniture anchor you in the past. But from thereon, modern elements bring you right into the 21st century. Delightfully quirky elements have been introduced in the form of vintage film and theatre posters to break the interior height of the walls. On a window sill, enormous home-grown pumpkins attest to your location on a real, working farm and your morning wake-up alarm comes from resident geese.
There are 2 bedrooms suites, each with a vast king-size bed luxuriously layered for cold winter evenings. Each bedroom is en suite and the bathrooms are sleek and white, and thankfully, very non-Spartan 17th century. The first suite contains a shower-over-bath, and the second suite contains a shower only.
There is a large, fully-equipped kitchen so stock up with local delicacies that you’ve gathered in the day and feast in. The dining room, with framed life-size vintage flags, seats 14. A massive log fire heats the main lounge which also offers a TV with DStv. In summer the high ceilings and thick walls naturally cool the rooms. Wi-Fi internet access is available. Outside is a patio with outdoor furniture and weber braai facilities.
If you want a break from the kitchen you can arrange for lunch or dinner to be brought over from the Manor House allowing you time in the tasting room prior to the dining.
The wine tasting room is a mere minute or so away and Meerlust’s exceptional line-up of vintages can be sampled and inevitably bought for lunch or dinner. Enjoy living life on this historic estate with no commercial activity around to spoil either the deep night sky or the tranquillity of the setting.
