From its earliest days Colesberg has been a bustling resting and meeting place, a gateway to the north for explorers and hunters – later also for those seeking their fortune on the Diamond and Goldfields. The town still is a traveller’s oasis on the main routes to the interior and the coast. Here the N1 from Johannesburg to Cape Town and the N9 from Port Elizabeth and the Garden Route meet. The town is the southern gateway to the Lake !Xariep Tourist Route (R58) along the Orange River which covers Gariepdam, Norvalspont, Venterstad, Oviston and Bethulie. The Colesberg-Kemper Museum with its 19th century toy collection, memorabilia, and also the permanent house of the UNISA Karoo Nomad Photographic Exhibition, together with Anglo-Boer War sites and a fine selection of 19th century buildings, offers an exciting reflection on the past and present. Other facilities include excellent restaurants, a nine-hole golf course, tennis, cycling and walking routes, bird-watching and unique sunrises and sunsets.
