Situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands, Paarl is the third oldest town in South Africa (after Cape Town and Stellenbosh) and also known for the longest main road. Paarl is renowned for its scenic beauty and deep viticulture and fruit growing heritage.
Paarl gained international attention on 11 February 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster prison (now known as Drakenstein Correctional Centre. Paarl is well known for its Pearl Mountain or “Paarl Rockâ€.This huge granite rock is formed by three rounded outcrops that make up Paarl Mountain and has become the rock climbing mecca for rock climbers.
Visit the numerous wine farms of the area, meander through the historical streets of Paarl, lined with oak trees and old Dutch buildings, or play a round of golf at Boschenmeer or Pearl Valley, two world-class courses.
The Afrikaans Language Monument, one of only 2 monuments in the world to be erected in honour of a language, is worth a visit on the slopes of Paarl Mountain, especially for the view. Full moon picnics are a monthly occurrence at the monument. Also visit the Afrikaans Language Museum situated in town.
