Description
Die Poort Private Nature Reserve is an ideal 1250 ha retreat, for peaceful and isolated tranquillity in a magnificent mountain and river environment. It borders onto the Greater Swartberg Protected Area and is situated within three international biodiversity hotspots, the Succulent Karoo, the Cape Floristic Region and Thicket.
The farm overlooks and includes the Gamka River where it leaves the Swartberg Mountain after its journey of 23 kilometre through Gamkapoort, the last 5 kilometres of which fall within the boundaries of Die Poort. They are the southern neighbours of Gamkaskloof, also known as “The Hell,” although separated by a tough 14 kilometre hike.
Die Poort Private Nature Reserve offers guests a choice of staying one of in three historic, self-catering guest cottages; The Barn, Fig Tree and Eagle’s Nest. Each unit has its own charm and a beautiful view of the wonderful surrounding mountains and river.
The two-bedroom Barn forms part of a restored barn that dates back from the early 20th century. It was also used for distilling wine and spirits. The Fig Tree was originally built as a pioneer dwelling in 1915. This one-bedroom cottage offers a comfortable double bed and a separate adjacent building with a bedroom offering two single beds and an en-suite bathroom. Eagle’s Nest is located close to the river and it is a restored pioneer cottage that dates back to 1881. The cottage consists of one bedroom with a double bed and two single beds inside the open-plan living room.
There is no electricity in our cottages. Each cottage is self-catering and have 1 - 2 bedrooms and spacious facilities. Warm water geysers are served by gas and solar panels and the fridges and hot-plates are served by gas and solar panels; light is provided by solar lamps. Each unit also has braai/barbecue facilities, but guests need to bring their own wood. Kindly note that if guests book the Eagle's Nest cottage you would need a 4x4 car or a high car to reach the cottage. There is no cell phone reception or Wi-Fi on the farm or in the valley. Instead we offer total rest for the soul. This is a place to unwind and restore the soul.
Guests can participate in a wide range of activities such as hiking, swimming, canoeing, mountain biking and birdwatching. Located nearby is the Bôjaanskop 4x4 Route. The district offers thermal springs, ostrich farms, the Cango Caves, Seweweeks Poort, Groenfontein-Kruis River Road, the Red Stone Hills, Gamkaberg Provincial Nature Reserve, Rooiberg Pass, Swartberg Pass and “The Hell”.
