- Klaarstroom Guest House
Klaarstroom is an authentic Karoo Victorian village - possibly the last remaining one in South Africa. The 13 buildings in the old part of the town mostly authentic, providing wonderful examples of Karoo vernacular architecture at the end of the 19th Century. A walk around town takes you back in time till when Denys Reitz wrote of a Boer Commando riding through a sleepy town at dawn before taking off over the Groot Swartberg mountains.
The Boer War Graves at the Anglican church further tell the story of the history of the region, as do many other sites of historical significance in the context of the Boer War in the area.
Klaarstroom Guest House is the closest guest house to the magnificent Meiringspoort gorge which tells a story of earth's geological formation in pre-history with twisted fold rocks and other breathtaking rock formations. No visit to the area is complete without a visit to the waterfall, 10kms into the poort. If you are lucky you may even catch a glimpse of the mythical mermaid who lives there!
The mountain views, abundant bird-life and tranquility can be soaked up around the pool or on the stoep at the guest house or you can venture out to one of many viewpoints within easy walking distance. The area lends itself to safe hikes and cycle-rides of differing difficulty levels in the surrounding countryside.
Children absolutely adore the freedom of being in the surrounding nature: be it in the koppies, at the river or in the garden or pool.
