Montagu lies nestled between two mountain ranges, halfway between Cape Town and the Garden Route, on the legendary Route 62. The weather is perfect - far enough South to escape the heat of the Karoo, far enough North to get away from the long wet winters of the Cape. In winter, the days are warm and sunny, with the occasional hint of rainfall. Autumn brings on a kaleidoscope of colours. In October, Montagu becomes a picture perfect haven with the abundance of roses for which it is famous.
The Robertson Wine Route just outside Montagu offers a diversity of estates ranging from incredible Cape Dutch Homesteads to informal boutique vineyards in the most beautiful gardens with history attached to every tree planted. This wine route is best known throughout the world as the Wine Route with gardens alongside the road as far as you drive - an attraction in its own right. One thing all farms have in common : they are all uncommercialized and guests are treated like royalty.
From Montagu there are a variety of footpaths to choose from. Lover's Walk being ideal for an early morning stroll, especially with the tortoises, dassies, guineafowl, Egyptian geese, and the odd baboon or small buck that shows itself.
Pierre Burger's tractor ride up the Langeberg, and the optional potjie that goes with it is a must. Downhill cycling is a vitalizing experience and Montagu is well known as a rock climbing and ridge scrambling destination.
