Readers Restaurant and Curious Cat Café, on Church Street, is one of the most eclectic spots you could ever come across, and as the name suggests, there’s a ton of cat-inspired memorabilia and items to browse through.

I absolutely adored the little touches, such as seashell and gem stones trinkets hanging from the doorways, and the cat-quotes scattered about. Also, the atmosphere was great – it was informal and you felt at ease taking your time to browse through the numerous items available for purchase.” – Roseanna McBain, Content Writer

“A homely restaurant made for cat lovers.”- Lauren Morling, Content Writer

“Readers Restaurant has a curious little shop filled with a wealth of cat paraphernalia and trinkets aimed at the aspiring crazy cat-person. There were real cats too, but I was disappointed when told these weren’t for sale.” – Peter Hanley, Content Manager

Ambiance at Readers (C) TG Team

Housed in an old homestead, Reader’s Restaurant exudes small town hospitality where you feel as if you have been personally invited to dine in someone’s home. Whether you come as a couple or a large group, I’m certain the sense of warmth, intimacy, and friendship is just the same. Carol is a master artist who paints in unexpected flavours. She surprised us with a side of crispy deep fried whole onions, chocolate pieces in our steak, and a unique array of homemade ice-creams from sweet balsamic vinegar to a warm curry flavour. In retrospect, the starter of avo, haloumi, and bacon salad would have set a better tone for Carol’s playful dishes if there had been a signature dressing to drizzle over it. I must commend Carol on her perfectly cooked steaks, because even though we were never asked how we would like them to be done, it’s apparent that she is of the same belief as me: a steak should never be cooked past medium rare. All in all, it was a delicious meal and Tulbagh should be proud to be home to such a talented chef.” – Desiree Haakonsen, Content Writer

The sherry on arrival was great – it was unexpected and greatly appreciated in warming up our cold bones. The dining hall set out for us was cosy, and I think everyone else has said it already, but the deep-fried whole onions with sweet chili were incredible! The sweet potato and mussel soup was great too, creamy and rich, and the chicken main – stuffed with spinach, feta, and chocolate was delicious – but so filling I had to take some home!” – Roseanna McBain, Content Writer

“The dining experience was excellent and we really felt at home. The food featured a blend of hearty home-style food and quirky treats. The fried whole onion dish was as unexpected as it was tasty, and the special ice-cream flavours were quite the experience!” – Peter Hanley, Content Manager

“Readers is definitely not your average meal out. Dining inside this shrine for all things feline was a memorable experience, surrounded by cat figurines and ornaments on all sides. I really enjoyed the unexpected chocolatey flavour in my ostrich and beef steak sauce and the unique ice cream flavours which made for plenty of laughter!”- Lauren Morling, Content Writer
